As the tiny house industry is still a newer one, there has been very little information about it. DIYers and even professional contractors are building tiny homes to their own standard without any real guide or regulations to follow. This means that there has historically been no way to determine if these tiny homes are safe and secure, which poses serious dangers for tiny homeowners.

Luckily, the National Organization of Alternative Housing (NOAH) has adopted Life Safety and Fire Safety Standards from the RV industry as well as Energy and Construction Standards from the home building industry to essentially create their own set of building codes for tiny home builders to follow.

In addition to the creation of these new standards, NOAH is dedicated to providing inspections and certifications for homes built to standard so that builders can demonstrate safety compliance for potential homeowners.

NOAH does not provide their inspection and certification services for modular built or factory homes. Instead, NOAH is committed to providing their assistance to builds by manufacturers, DIYers and educational organizations.

Benefits

Ensures Road Safety

Inspections are especially necessary for mobile tiny homes. Regardless of whether you are planning to build the home yourself or if you are going to hire someone, every aspect needs to be measured inspected and certified for road safety. You must keep in mind that when you are towing your tiny home from one location to another that it cannot be treated as any other vehicle. There are special standards and codes that must be followed.

Removes Guesswork

Far too often, tiny home builders are simply trying to guess whether or not the workmanship of the house is sound. Again, these homes will need to be secure and stable enough to live in and possibly tow as well. So, it is important to touch on safety points of inspection such as windows, loft height and areas for water and fuel tanks.

Ensures Compliance with Strict Regulations

The laws for tiny living vary from state to state, city to city and even county to county. So, it can be very difficult to determine if your tiny home follows the regulations in your area, especially if you plan to move often. A NOAH inspection and certification will ensure you that your home is ready to be hauled and parked wherever you want.

Types of Certifications

NOAH offers several membership for various types of builders and DIYers. Each membership comes with at least one or two NOAH seals depending on the membership. The NOAH seal is essentially a badge that demonstrates a builder’s compliance with the standards and codes for that specific building. It is also a stamp of proof that the building has been inspected and certified. Additional NOAH seals can be bought separately as you build more homes.

In many areas of the county, legislation is changing or updating to encourage homeowners to think differently about their living space. Tiny homes offer the opportunity to own a home at a fraction of the typical price and the freedom to spend time and money living a life of adventure and ease instead of upkeep and maintenance. It’s a great opportunity for trade professionals to widen the scope of their offerings to include the specific needs of tiny home owners.
