The Modular Building Institute (MBI) is an international non-profit trade association serving the modular construction industry. Its members consist of manufacturers, contractors and dealers who are divided between two industry segments— permanent modular construction (PMC) and relocatable buildings (RB). Founded in 1983, the MBI has expanded its membership to also include architects, owner/developers and general contractors. Furthermore, it offers an associate membership option for companies that supply building components, services and financing.

The MBI’s main objectives are:

  • Expanding the use of offsite construction through innovative construction practices
  • Extending outreach and education to the construction community and customers

The MBI publishes a newsletter once a month in order to provide timely and newsworthy information about the commercial modular construction industry. Coverage includes association news, legislative items of interest to members, financial outlooks, calendar of events and other information related to MBI and/or the modular industry.

Membership Directory

Once you become a member, you will receive a free listing in the MBI Membership Directory. It is the only directory dedicated exclusively to the modular construction industry and serves as an informative resource published in the Modular Advantage magazine.

Modular Advantage Magazine

The MBI Modular Advantage magazine features MBI company news, member interviews, MBI member case studies, the membership directory, annual reports, Awards of Distinction winners, member news, upcoming events and other industry related news. Publications are released and distributed twice a month via print, digital on the MBI website and email to over 250,000 industry professionals.

Inside Modular Podcast

If you are an avid podcast listener, you will enjoy the MBI’s Inside Modular podcast. Inside Modular is MBI's podcast dedicated to every area of commercial modular construction. Episodes are released several times a month and feature interviews and stories as well as industry news and updates from MBI staff. The podcast is available to the public on all major podcast platforms so you can take a listen before even becoming a member.

How do I join?

If you are interested in joining the MBI, you have the option to apply online or download and print a pdf version of the application.

Download Application

  • Visit the MBI website
  • Click Join in the top right corner.
  • You will have the option to select your role in the industry:
  1. Dealer/Contractor/Manufacturer
  2. Owner/Developer
  3. Architect/Engineer
  4. Associate
  • Once you know which membership role you want to apply for, click or download a pdf under the position title.
  • Print or use a PDF filler to fill out the application form.
  • Submit application:
  1. Via mail: 285 Hydraulic Ridge Road, Suite 6 Charlottesville, VA 22901
  2. Via fax: 434-296-3361.

Upon submitting your application, it will be presented to the MBI Board of Directors for approval.

Apply Online

  • Visit the MBI website
  • Click Join in the top right corner.
  • You will have the option to select your role in the industry:
  1. Dealer/Contractor/Manufacturer
  2. Owner/Developer
  3. Architect/Engineer
  4. Associate
  • Once you know which membership role you want to apply for, click Apply Online under the position title.
  • You will be directed to a page where you have the option to either sign in or create an account. Click Create an Account.
  • You will be required to reenter your company type and your company name.
  • Next, you will be directed to a site registration form. Once you are finished filling out the form, click Continue.
  • You will then arrive to a registration confirmation page. Click Apply for Membership Now.
  • Lastly, you will be directed to an online application. Fill out the required fields and select Submit once you have completed it.

Upon submitting your application, it will be presented to the MBI Board of Directors for approval.
